Were Married

22 DECEMBER 2018

OUR STORy

In February 2007, Paula Barletto Andrade flew from Porto Alegre in Brazil and arrived in Wellington, New Zealand. Paula was here to take a six-month course in English and experience more about New Zealand, its people, and the culture. In July of the same year, Mark Westerby flew back from the UK to Wellington where he resumed his role at the NZ Fringe Festival.

Both Paula and Mark are lovers of arts, culture, and film. They had both chosen the perfect city to experience these things. People working in the creative industries run in similar circles - it is literally 1 degree of separation. However, it took 6 years for Paula and Mark to cross paths.

Paula and Mark have two people to thank for bringing them together, Leandro and Craig.

Leandro has been Paula's best friend since 2010. Together, they organised the Reel Brazil Film Festival. Mark met Leandro on several occasions when he interviewed him about the festival on the arts radio show Caffeine & Aspirin. Leandro invited Mark to the opening of the festival in April 2014. It was there where he met Paula, all smiles, commanding the room with her beautiful presence. Mark gathered up the nerve to approach her and they had a five-minute conversation about film...and the weather. Paula has no recollection of meeting Mark that night.

Luckily for this story, Mark remembers the night well. He went home and found her profile on Facebook and asked her to 'friend' him. She did.

Fast-forward to July 2015. Mark saw Paula was going to attend a Pecha Kucha evening (informal and fun gatherings where creative people get together and share their ideas, works, thoughts, holiday snaps) at Hannah Playhouse. Mark duly put on his best outfit and went along hoping to catch her eye. Paula didn't show up, instead opting to go to a party with friends.

Later that week, Mark was catching up with Craig, a colleague who also happened to run the Pecha Kucha event in Wellington. Mark admitted he didn't attend the last event just for the creative inspiration :)

Craig was a mutual friend of Paula, so he said to Mark "leave it with me".

Mark left it with him.

Mark's 40th birthday rolled around that August. For the record, Mark invited Paula. Paula swears she never got an invite. Craig phoned to say although he couldn't attend, he got Mark a present - Paula's phone number.

It took Mark a week to build up the nerve to call Paula. Mark was slowing dying on the end of the phone as he asked her out and she didn't know who he was. To her credit, she gave Mark a break and said 'yes'.

Several dates later, Paula and Mark became a regular item. Paula continues to be fashionably late and Mark continues to be overly romantic. It's a perfect match :)

You can be there to witness fashionable lateness and romantic expression on December 22, 2018.

We hope you will join us.

ON THE DAY

NO DIA DO EVENTO

UNPLUGGED

We plan to make our wedding an unplugged one. We wish to see your smiles rather than your devices. The memories we make together are much more important than #socialmediaposts.

We have a photographer with us on the day and she takes some amazing photos!

CHILDREN
Although we do love all of your little cherubs, we would request that our wedding remain adults only. So book a sitter and dust off those dancing shoes!
